Superman vs. a Jedi Knight

Posted by HP on November 6, 2009

The inquiry began because my friend, Nate, mentioned a thread on Yahoo Answers in which someone asked if a red light-saber could kill Superman. This caused the gears in my mind to begin to grind and then smoke poured out of my ears. As you may know (or at least I do) Superman has two weaknesses: Kryptonite and magic.

This lead me to wonder, who would win in a battle: a Jedi Knight or Superman. Is the Force considered a mystical power or is it biological? I felt that a Jedi would have a good chance at holding his own IF the Force was considered a form of magic. However, Episode I seems to suggest that it is a biological entity, dependent on the amount of midichlorians in a creatures biology.

ZSN’s own Mike “Michaelson” Michael made sure to quip:

The Jedi’s devotion to that sad religion didn’t help Darth Vader find the missing droids!  Why would it help them defeat Superman?

Nate began to ponder:

Even if [the Force] was magic, which it isn’t (at least not anymore) could it really do anything?  I can only think of a few examples of force based attacks, [such as] choking. Could the average Jedi generate enough force (not The Force but force) to squeeze Superman’s throat closed? Even if it is magic it sure isn’t magic, like say Harry Potter magic, it’s not like Yoda could use the Force to turn people into a bunny or anything.

I would suggest that, yes, if the Force was magical, a Jedi could stand a chance against Superman. They could force choke Superman and because as a magic, if will effect Superman differently. It might take about as much effort to choke or crush him as it would a normal person, as magic tends to cut through his defenses.

I asked my resident Star Wars expert, Travis. His initial reaction was to state that the Jedi would win because “Superman sucks.” I asked him to set aside personal bias, he was able to tell me about the Ysalamir. The Ysalamir is a type of space lizard that can repel the Force using biological defenses, which suggests that the Force is a biological effect. Which means that would have little effect on Superman.

Yeah, Kal-El has this shit locked down. Superman wins.

Then again, in Episode 3, it suggests that Jedi can just get shot in the back and die and are terrible judges of character. So, they might not have had a chance to begin with.

To be sure, we took it over to the experts at Yahoo Answers. They were not as informative as I had hoped.

Who do you think would win? My money is still on Kal-El.

I’m probably going to go kill myself now,

As much as I hate Superman, he’d probably win. Just look at how many Jedi died in EP. III. Clearly they aren’t that tough.

I want more discussion on Superman vs. Doc Manhattan!

Well I’m not sure who would win, i hate superman, but without that i’m not sure. I think one thing that your all forgetting is that we have not seen all of the force abilities there are. Take for example the idea of the chocking, or telekinesis. We don’t know exactly how that works, we assume because of the position of the hand of the Jedi that it is simply acting as a long distance hand squeezing the windpipe closed. But what if the Jedi used it to simple reach in and grab hold of the heart and squeeze it till it was mush? or if he used it to create blocks of pure force in the windpipe rather then squeeze it closed, then it wouldn’t matter if the Force was strong enough to compress supermans windpipe.

and I do agree that as soon as superman gets close to a Jedi the jedi might have some problems, but we also know that a jedi can boost his own strength and speed, maybe enough to match the main of steal. Also, how powerful a Force field can the Jedi project, is he strong enough to simply hold the main of steal in one place with bonds of Force so that he can create the said blockedge within superman’s brain, blood stream or windpipe and allow that to kill the man of steal.

I’d say that he wanted to and he knew going into it he wanted to, Superman could simply super-speed up to a Jedi and toss them into space/burn them/freeze them/break them in two at anytime he wanted.

I don’t see the Force making Jedi in any way as strong, durable, or fast as Superman.

It’s never really been suggested that the Force can be focused on one particular area of a person (heart, throat), but if it could it’s still unlikely that it would be enough to stop Superman’s super-organs. If it were a form of mysticism, maybe, but it’s not.

Let’s consider one of the latest in-canon additions to the Star Wars universe, The Force Unleashed. The force is super strong in that game, but it still took several minutes to bring down a Star Destroyer. Supes could be in and out of your face by then.
